VW Golf 8 RSI Dahlbaeck Tribute

The VW Golf 8 RSI Dahlbäck Tribute is the Digital Drivers race build of the Golf 8 R with an Audi five-cylinder. Its inspiration is the Golf IV "RSI" of the Swedish team Dahlbäck Racing: a project begun in 1998 with an Audi 2.1-litre 20-valve five-cylinder turbo, four-wheel drive and an ex-IMSA Audi gearbox, quoted at up to 860 PS at 8,700 rpm and 1,014 Nm. Hans Dahlbäck, who built it, died in 2017. This car is our homage, not a copy, and no part of it comes from that team.

what this stage is about

The Golf 8 RSI as a race hatch for track days and the Nordschleife: Audi five-cylinder, quattro, TCR-style aero, 18-inch slicks and race brakes; a wide TCR-style body with flares, bumpers and skirts.

  • Audi 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder with BAR-TEK's Stage 2 on the standard turbo: downpipe, intake, power pipe, oil cooler, 102 RON, 520 PS and 630 Nm (maker); the curve between the published peaks is our estimate.
  • DQ500 seven-speed DSG with an 860 Nm clutch pack in the game, quattro drive with a Torsen centre differential, 35 % to the front axle (Kunos' RS6 drivetrain); the Golf's driving modes are removed.
  • KW V4 three-way coilovers, race brakes, a TCR rear wing, splitter and canards, about 38 % of the downforce on the front axle.
  • 1,390 kg with driver and without fuel (estimate), 52 % on the front axle (transaxle layout, estimate), track 1.767 / 1.739 m for the wide arches, 100 l safety cell.
  • Setup: ride heights 80 / 90 mm, springs 120 / 100 N/mm, brake bias 68.0 %, TC 6, ABS 7, wing at +5, 50 l of fuel.

The measurements

25laps with telemetry

driven in this car by club drivers and shared from the app of their own free will. The setups marked “measured” take tyre pressures, fuel per lap and brake bias from laps like these.

  • BAR-TEK's own Golf 8 R with a 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder: 1,020 PS on a MAHA dyno, the figure of Stage 3
  • BAR-TEK's tuning ladder for the 2.5 TFSI: 520, 700, 800 and 1,000 PS with named parts and bundle prices, the basis of the four stages
  • Club telemetry on the Nordschleife (2026-10-25): front tyres +69 to +73 K per lap against +24 K on the M4 GT3, the reason for the Torsen centre differential

  • The front slick is now a bespoke hard compound on every stage, so it takes less heat under load; a fictional compound (no real tyre cited), the rear slick is unchanged.
  • Transaxle layout: 52 % of the weight on the front axle instead of 60.5 %, total weight unchanged, nothing visible changes (an estimate, not a real car).
  • Springs 120 / 100 N/mm, anti-roll bars 45,000 / 25,000 N/m, brake bias 68 %; wing, splitter and canards keep their place on the body, about 38 % of the downforce on the front axle.
  • New Nordschleife setups for all stages with new cold pressures (estimates) and fuel from measured laps; older setups still carry the old bias and pressures, so please use the new ones.

The car

Instead of the Golf R's four-cylinder, Audi's 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder from the RS3 sits in the nose, built in four stages after BAR-TEK's tuning ladder for this engine: 520 PS on the standard turbo, 700 and 800 PS with Turbo-Total turbochargers, and 1,020 PS as in BAR-TEK's own five-cylinder Golf 8 R. It drives through the RS3's DQ500 seven-speed DSG with uprated clutch packs and quattro four-wheel drive with a Torsen centre differential, a permanent quattro drive like the Dahlbäck car's ex-IMSA Audi gearbox. The chassis follows the TCR touring cars: KW V4 three-way coilovers, race brakes, 10 x 18 wheels with slicks, a rear wing and a splitter.

1,390 kg in the game with driver and without fuel (an estimate from the Golf GTI Clubsport 24h race car), 52 % on the front axle (transaxle layout, estimate), 100 l safety cell. The wide TCR-style body is fitted: our own front and rear bumpers, bolt-on arch flares over a track 120 mm wider than before, side skirts, a TCR rear wing, a splitter and canards; our own wheels and shift lights with a race dash come in later updates.

The original

Volkswagen built the Golf 8 R from 2020: a 2.0-litre EA888 four-cylinder turbo with 320 PS and 420 Nm, a seven-speed DSG and 4MOTION four-wheel drive with a rear drive unit that sends the rear torque to the outer wheel.

Dahlbäck Racing of Borlänge, Sweden, began its Golf IV "RSI" in 1998: an Audi five-cylinder turbo in a stripped shell with a tube front structure, four-wheel drive and an Audi IMSA gearbox, one of the most powerful Golfs of its time. Today tuners fit Audi's 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder into the Golf; BAR-TEK's Golf 8 R with a reinforced DAZA engine made 1,020 PS on a MAHA dyno in 2025. This build combines both ideas.
